Bursting Large Documents

Accounting_ReportingBarr EOM - Bursting Large Documents

Our customers send millions of documents through Barr output management products on a daily basis.  In the vast majority of the cases, the documents represent exactly what needs to be printed or sent.  However, there are times when large documents need to be split into smaller ones.  Common scenarios include load balancing between devices, extracting only relevant pages, emailing only parts of a document, etc.

Barr EOM supports a wide array of bursting functions.  Administrators use Business Rules to specify which documents to burst.  The bursting method is different depending on whether the document is in a common PDL such as PDF, PCL, Postscript, AFP, or in record mode typical of line data coming from mainframe hosts.  The criteria for bursting can also vary.  The simplest criterion is by number of pages, which is often used in load balancing scenarios.  The more complex criteria are based on actual content in the document.  Common scenarios would be looking for an account number in a certain spot on the page and creating a new document every time the number changes.

In addition to configuring the criteria for bursting, Barr EOM administrators can specify options for the resulting documents.  For instance, in the example above the account number can be extracted, indexed, and used to generate the names of new files.  If the original document included for example bills for 1000 clients, the result of this bursting action would be 1000 small documents, each named according to the respective account number.  These documents would proceed to go through Barr EOM’s normal processing, thus having access to the same output options as any other document that comes into our software.
